as an artist my main tools are: coding and a software called touchdesigner (if you dont know the latter: it's a node-based gui thingy where you can do real-time visuals). im constantly baffled by the question why coding vs. td feels that different: td is more akin to sketching and coding is...typing. so i made an instrument that watches me work in td: every drag, wire, and delete, timestamped:
my hands are on the work only a sliver of the time but the rest isn't staring. making runs as a fast loop, touch → check → touch, ~2,300 times in 143 minutes. median pause: 2.5 seconds. true pauses: 9 in the whole session. and 8 of them ended with structural change: new geometry created, dead ends deleted.
in td, beside the network (my actual workspace) there's always the live render. the sketch here isn't a draft of the artwork but more like a cognitive prosthesis, an in-between of what it could be vs. what it is. the constant tweaking reflects an exploration of possibilities and evaluating them. paper sketches hold alternatives in space, multiple contour lines side by side. a td parameter change holds them in time, the swept trajectory is a temporal pentimento.
